There are various mindsets when it comes to your employment. You may like your work and consider it important and are prepared to give it your all. Then on the other hand, you may hate your job and just put the bare minimum effort into it. If your career happens to be that of a hairdresser than most likely you like your work, otherwise you would not have chosen this as your profession. Therefore, the first aspect of being a good hairdresser has been met, and that’s putting your best effort into your work.

Confidence is not only something your must possess but you must portray it as well. A client is not going to be relaxed if she feels that you don’t think you are capable of what you are doing. In order to gain the trust of your client you must show her that you know what you are doing and prior to the completed work, this can only be evident in your self confidence. Never been ashamed about having to ask a question of your fellow employees.

That does not show lack of confidence or not knowing what you are doing. It displays that you care enough to be sure of what you are doing. On the other hand, if you are asking multiple questions then the client is likely going to show some concern about your credentials, as to whether you really have enough experience to be performing the service that you are.

You must be a good listener as well. Your client in most cases will have likes and dislikes which you must be aware of. If she doesn’t express these then ask her. Some clients will know exactly what they want and others will have a general idea but mainly leave it up to you. For the clients that know what they want, ensure you can do as they ask.

If you feel it is not possible, explain to the client what it’s not feasible. Better you do this before you start then afterwards when its not done as she specified. At that time, you will just look as though you are making excuses for not being able to do the job because of your incapabilities. In addition, if a client is aware she cannot get want she wants for logical reasons she will often opt for something else that is.

For the client that leaves it up to your discretion as to style or color you still need a fair idea of what she likes. Step her through exactly what you are going to do for her so there are no surprises. If she objects to something now is the time not afterwards. It can be difficult to please a client because in some ways they expect you to be a mind reader. You can get past that hurdle with good dialogue. Its important to please your client because she is going to be your best advertising. In this business, you want to build a steady clientele and you can only do this through good service and repeat business.
