As far back as you can remember you have loved to style everyone’s hair that would allow you to. Now its time to choose a career and you are seriously considering become a hairdresser. It’s important not to base you decisions because of your experiences from your earlier years, where you were just playing with hair.

The Hair industry is a faced paced and fast growing business. This means many more individuals are opting to enter this field, which in turn means more competition. You must decide to be fully committed to your training and successful graduation if you want to find suitable employment with potential advancement in this field.

People and women especially will give up many things when the economy is tight but their appearance is not one of them. Their hair plays a major role in this and therefore remains important. The Industry may slow down in a bad economy but it never diminishes.

A career in Hairdressing does not simply end at taking up a position in a local Salon. You have the opportunity to specialize as movie and theatre hairdresser, or perhaps for a modeling agency. Then on the other hand, you may some day want to open your own Salon. To achieve any of these goals means continuous dedication to the job, and constant learning. The biggest mistake a stylist can make is becoming complacent in their learning. Hair fashion is constantly changing and the stylist must be willing to learn the techniques that will keep her current.

The other aspect you must consider is the long hours you will be required to work. The times when you would like to be off doing the things you enjoy are most probably the peek times your services are in demand. This means your social life will suffer in order to benefit your career, at least for the first few years. You have to be determined that you can accept this.

Another factor you have to consider is do you really enjoy people as a whole. In other words, you may enjoy doing their hair but will you enjoy interacting with them. Not many clients are willing to sit in a salon chair without carrying on pleasant conversation. This means you have to have great people skills and be able to multi task as well. Some individuals concentrate so much at the task they forget about the person they are working on.

Being able to work under pressure is a must. The entire hair industry works off time schedules. Clients who are kept waiting often will become angry and you have to be able to diffuse the situation properly. Remember your entire career is based on building a good sound clientele list. Repeat business is the main stay of your success. Often a very successful Stylist will have clientele that will follow them to their place of employment. This is a good indicator of success. This doesn’t mean that you should fall into the practice of stealing your employers business. This is not good ethics, you will soon gain a reputation for doing this, and it will follow you wherever you go for employment.
