We all want to have shiny, healthy hair, but many of us are doing more harm than good because we believed some of the most common hair care myths. We explain the top 10 myths and tell you the facts behind the fable.

1) Too many hair care products can cause hair loss: FALSE

There are no professionally produced products which are known to lead directly to hair loss. However, beware of home made products as they could contain damaging ingredients.

2) Frequent haircuts make the hair grow faster: FALSE

The growth rate of hair is biologically determined and not affected by its being cut. Thickness is also unaffected by cutting, through people often think it becomes thicker when cut because it is natually thicker at the base. If you suffer from excessively thin or fine hair, you can make it appear thicker with volume enhancing hair products.

3) Colour treatments can cause permanent hair loss: FALSE

Although most colouring treatments do contain certain chemicals, and these can lead to damage if not properly administered, colouring in itself does not usually cause permanent hair loss. Excessive bleaching can cause damage, though.

4) Salon products are exactly the same as cheaper products: FALSE

In general, the higher price of salon products is justifiable due to their superior quality ingredients. The ingredients in salon hair products like Tigi, Kerastase and ghd are designed to provide improved conditioning and moisturizing and more intense cleansing.

5) Washing too often causes hair damage: FALSE

You can wash as often as you like, although the number of washes recommended for good hair care is three times per week. Not washing enough is more likely to cause damage, because the scalp s natural oil, which acts as a lubricant, can become blocked, leading to dry and brittle hair.

6) Rinse out conditioners do not help with hair care: FALSE

Even though they are designed to be rinsed out, these conditioners are made to leave small deposits of moisturising proteins and other beneficial ingredients to create a softer and shinier finish, as well as making it better protected.

7) The more shampoo you use the cleaner you hair will be: FALSE

Most people use far more shampoo than they need to. In fact, a dollop about the size of a £2 coin should be enough for medium to long hair. You will need to leave even less if you have splashed out on salon products.

8) Conditioner can repair split ends: FALSE

Despite what you might have heard in the ad break, there is no special formula in conditioner which can repair split ends, even amongst the very best products. However, a good quality conditioner will help to improve the appearance of split ends, by smoothing down the cuticle. Conditioner can also prevent the damage which can lead to split ends.

9) Blow drying can lead to permanent hair loss: FALSE

While careless blow drying can burn or dry out hair, which can make it fall out, it will start to grow back straight away so no lasting damage is actually caused in most cases.

10) It s best to brush it for 100 strokes per day: FALSE

If you over brush you can damage the cuticle and cause split ends. It is better to forget the brush altogether and switch to a comb, though a good quality brush should not cause damage. Avoid brushing when wet as this can cause damage.
