Dog is man’s best friend. Having a new puppy in the home is a wonderful and exciting experience for the whole family to enjoy. Unfortunately, raising a young puppy is a lot like caring for a newborn baby. The puppy does not yet know how to care for itself and as a result you will need to train the puppy how to find its food bowl and learn where to go when it has to potty. Training the puppy how to find its food is rather simple; the puppy knows that it will not eat until it finds the food. As a result they quickly learn to remember where to go when they are hungry. Unfortunately, a newborn puppy has very little bladder control and will relieve itself when the urge hits them to do so. With the being a potential disaster to your home’s interior and not to mention how disturbing it is to accidentally step in their mess, it is essential to start house training your puppy as soon as possible. The sooner you start the training process the better chance you have of quick solution to this problem.

One of the easiest methods that are commonly used to control in home accidents is to regulate the availability of food and water to the puppy. If the puppy will be left inside the house for several hours during the day while you are at work, you could create of feeding schedule for your dog. Granted your dog cannot tell time but it does learn your routine in time. If you get up early in the morning and start making coffee while you get showered and dressed for work, put out the puppy’s food and water at the same time. This will of course cue your puppy to eat and drink at once. When you return to the kitchen to have your coffee and breakfast, send the puppy outside to go potty. While this may not work on the very first try, in time the puppy will learn that it is supposed to go potty right after it eats to avoid making accidents inside the house while you are away. This leads to our next suggestion for house training your puppy.

While you are going to work or for whatever reason no one will be home to let the puppy out on a regular basis, try confining the puppy to a small room. You should start with the room that you use to let the puppy outside to go potty. Setup a baby gate at the doorway to prevent the puppy from getting out of the room. Inside the room, lay some newspaper on the ground near the door. There are some places that sell urine smells that you could pour a little bit on the paper to attract to puppy to it ultimately getting them to mark their territory on it and hopefully not as much on your floor.

When you are home be sure to take your dog outside on a regular basis. If you have large backyards put the puppy on its leash and walk it around the yard. Your puppy will be sniffing all over the ground to learn what its home area smells like. He will also on occasion pee on the trees, plants, and the ground to mark its territory. Every time your puppy voids in a proper place, stop to praise and reward the puppy for doing its business where it should. This will reassure your puppy that you approve of his actions and create a memory that repeating this performance will gain him praise and play where other places that he is not rewarded for are not places he should do his business.

When it comes to house training your puppy takes time and patience. Your little puppy is just like a newborn baby, it does not know any better at first. You have to create a routine for your puppy to help them learn where they are supposed to relieve themselves. At no point in time should you every harshly punish an animal for making accidents regardless of where it may be. Dogs that are abused by their handlers will eventually attack someone because it’s a defense they are taught.
