Chicken pox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It starts with moderate fever and then characteristic spots appearing in two or three waves, mainly on the body and head rather than the hands and becoming itchy raw pox (pocks), small open sores which heal mostly without scarring. Chicken pox is a common, but very contagious disease. Usually this disease effects children, but adult cases do happen and are then known as shingles. So, what is chicken pox? The illness, medically known as Varicella, is a common viral infection. When your child catches this illness, it causes a rash on the skin. Chicken pox occurs mostly in winter and spring, but can happen any time of the year. Because it is so contagious, children often pass it from child to child during the school year. Again, though, it is a year round illness. Chicken pox is caused due to a virus. It is highly contagious and afflicts children as well as adults. However, when children get chicken pox, the symptoms are not that severe as when adults get it. With the advent of varicella vaccine, the incidence of chicken pox has greatly reduced in the US but there are still some cases.
A vaccine has been available since 1995, and is now required in some countries for children to be admitted into elementary school. In addition, effective medications (e.g., aciclovir) are available to treat healthy and immunocompromised persons. Calamine lotion is often used to ease itching and paracetamol to reduce fever. Aspirin is not recommended in children as it can lead to Reye's syndrome.
