Cold sores or fever blisters can be annoying, not to mention unsightly. Such sores are the products of the herpes simplex virus. They will begin as red dots, then start puffing out, all itchy and tingling and cold sore swelling will take place. As the blister gathers moisture and water, it gets larger, and even more embarrassingly conspicuous. Cold sores actually come from any contact of the herpes simplex virus with your mouth, perhaps early in your childhood. The virus picked out a host cell and moved into it. The cell, perhaps a nerve, then suffered to become the puppet of the virus, as the viral DNA gave orders to the host to produce more of the herpes simplex virus. Cold sore is called herpes labialis on medical term. The infection caused by the herpes simplex type I virus. It leads to the development of a small patch of erythema then a vesicle that erodes appears and usually itching and soreness on the skin of the mouth, lips or lip area.

Cold sores are created by the replication process of the herpes simplex virus type 1 or type 2. Current studies show that about 77% of cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex type 1 and about 23% by the type 2 version of this simplex virus. For the most part, cold sores caused by either type of the herpes virus are identical. They both look the same, hurt the same, are just as contagious, and last about the same amount of weeks. Cold sore sufferers will many times create a new area of infection on their body with contaminated fingers or towels. The fluid that weeps from cold sores is teaming with fresh virus looking for a new home. If you have a cut on your finger and you get even one virus in that cut, you will likely get cold sores on your finger.

There are a variety of cold sore remedies available at your local stores. For the most part, these are comfort remedies. They have not been proven to shorten the cold sore event by more than a few days. But, comfort is important too. Look for products with a numbing agent for reducing pain, and an anti-bacterial to prevent a secondary bacterial infection. Getting rid of cold sores can be as simple as taking a daily vitamin supplement. Or it may take more effort by following an alkaline enhancing diet or trying different topical treatments. There is nothing currently available from medical science or natural science that will eliminate the herpes virus from your body. If you want to be cold sore free for life - the secret you must know is keeping the virus asleep. If you consult to your doctor, he may recommend you to take the antiviral medicines. Antiviral medicines work best if you take it when you think the virus is just starting to come back, before you see the blister. For most people anti-viral medicines are probably the most effective cold sore cure to stopping the virus while using the medication, but they do not prevent recurrence once the treatment is stopped.
