Hysteria is commonly assumed that Hippocrates, the father of medicine. Hysteria may be a defense mechanism to avoid painful emotions by unconsciously transferring this distress to the body. There may be a symbolic function for this, for example a rape victim may develop paralyzed legs. As an illness, hysteria has had a long-standing association with the feminine. Hysteria is a neurotic over-reaction to an experience or situation. You are not hysterical in the medical sense of the word if you normally react to moments of stress by weeping uncontrollably or shrieking. Many people tend to over-dramatize their feelings, and they are not mentally ill because of this tendency. The most common causes of hysteria are sexual excess or sexual repression, perverted habits of thought and idleness. Heredity plays an important part in its causation. A nervous family, taintand faulty emotional training, when young, are predisposing causes. The emotional shocks may have been caused by mental or physical factors such as mental strain, stress, fear, worry, depression, traumatism, masturbation and prolonged sickness.

The main factor that can be held responsible for causing hysteria is mental stress, strain and anxiety. Hysteria can victimize both men and women, but is more commonly found among young women in the age group of 14-25 years. The jambul fruit is considered an effective home remedy for hysteria. Three kilograms of this fruit and a handful of salt should be put in a jug filled with water. The jug should be kept in the sun for a week. A women suffering from hysteria should take 300 gm of these fruits on an empty stomach, and drink a cup of water from the jug. The day she starts this treatment, 3 Kg more of these fruits, mixed with a handful of salt, should be kept in another jug filled with water, so that when the contents of the first jug are finished, the contents of the other will be ready for use.

In case, you are not aware of the specific uses of different essential oils or even the specific oil, which you are going to use, then it may do more harm than good. The essential oils are extremely concentrated extracts, acquired by distilling various materials of the plants like leaves, flowers, wood, grasses and many more. An aromatherapy treatment has also shown to beneficial to emotional problems such as moodiness, depression, irritability, hysteria, panic attack, insomnia and lack of concentration. Blue Skullcap (S lateriflora) and Common Skullcap (S. galericulata) are powerful medicinal herbs, they are used as alternative medicine to antispasmodics, often in combination with other herbs, as a mood stabilizer during a period of high stress. Scientific studies are proving this to be a versatile plant in many areas for mental disorders.

The goal of treatment is to discover the underlying problem and help the person solve it. No medical treatment can cure symptoms of hysteria, so everything depends on sympathetic, patient psychotherapy. The only drug that may be prescribed for hysteria is a tranquilizer to help the person relax while the underlying problem is being uncovered and the symptoms gradually eliminated.
