Are you frustrated by all the different makes and models of vacuum cleaners out there? You want to get a good quality vacuum cleaner that will last a long time and save money in the process. The quality and features of any vacuum cleaner is reflected in the price of the unit.

If you have family members with long hair get a vacuum cleaner that has a stainless steel brush roller with ball bearings. Some vacuums may actually put dirt back into your home. You may want an 'after motor' 'true HEPA filter' in a sealed system.

Vacuums can lose suction when the filters or bags get clogged and blow dirt back into the air. Some vacuums rely on bags or filters to trap the dirt; they can clog up and lose their suction. Check out features vs. the weight to choose the right model for you.

Once you feel fully informed, if you can, go to a local store to get a look at those you've picked and try them out. Check the amps of the vacuum cleaner. If you plan to buy online you can still try out vacuum cleaners at your local vacuum cleaner dealers and stores that carry vacuum cleaners.

You may want to find a canister vacuum cleaner with wheels that won't scuff or damage your floors. A self-propelled vacuum cleaner may sound great, but they're actually very heavy to lift. Of course you want to get the cleanest possible 'clean' for your carpets.

A few different tools and wands may seem like a plus, but if you rarely ever use tools, they may just be an extra expense. You can find vacuum cleaners listed in the yellow pages under the vacuum cleaner repair stores, classified ads in your local newspaper, on Craigslist online, eBay and other online auction sites and the manufacturer and dealer websites on the Internet. Canister vacuum cleaners that have onboard tool storage make tools handy to reach.

Higher priced uprights have a wider cleaning path, possibly dirt sensors, and some will be self-propelled; they may have pre-motor filters to protect the motor from damage too. Try assembling and taking apart the attachments before you buy. It'll cost more buying a unit with a bag because you'll be buying bags ongoing.

A low-end upright model will usually have only a suction hose with a crevice tool, stair brush, and extended wand piece. In the lower-end of uprights you will find a few models that have an additional feature, like bagless models or models with bags and a full bag indicator light. Though they may not be more powerful, higher priced uprights have a lot of gadgets that may be handy for your home, providing you use them.

HEPA is an acronym for "high efficiency particulate air". To receive the true or absolute HEPA designation, filters must perform to a certain standard. When shopping for vacuum cleaners it's a good idea to take your health - (allergies, asthma, respiratory health, back health and physical health) into consideration. Reducing or eliminating particles will make cleaner air for everyone in your home.

Look for the serial number and test results that are printed on true or absolute HEPA filters; make sure that the test results at .3 microns are 99.97 percent or above. If possible test air-tightness; you can do this by vacuuming for a little bit with a floor model and see how much dust has collected on the outside of the vacuum. A bagless vacuum that uses filters may leak dust, dust mites, mold spores, fungus, bacteria, smoke particles, chemicals and allergen particles into the air, so small you may not be able to see all of them.

Make sure you comparison shop. Ask your friends and associates what they use and like. Take time to do your research, the same way you would for any major purchase and buying a vacuum cleaner won't be difficult.
