Teeth may be one of the most important parts of the body, overall. Without the teeth, proper mastication (chewing) is impossible and available nutritional utilization is not possible. Bright Side Dental, a leading Michigan dentist, makes it easier to acquire proper dental care.

It is well-known that twice-yearly visits to the dentist are necessary for top-notch dental health.
Why? Obviously, we know that we need to use our teeth to break down the food into smaller pieces so that it can fit down the throat. But actually, the digestive process begins in the mouth. This vital component of chewing the food into molecules is important so that the enzymes in the saliva can contribute to the chemical process of digestion.
Of course, the saliva lubricates the food which causes less stress on the esophagus, but there’s much more going on. The digestion of carbohydrates begins with enzymes breaking down some of the chemical bonds that connect the simple sugars that makeup starches. And the first stage of fat digestion begins with the secretion of enzymes from glands that are located under the tongue.
If this vital step in digestion is not possible due to missing teeth, much of the nutritional value of the foods can be lost. Food that is poorly digested can mean lack of absorption of the nutrients and vitamins that may be provided by those nutrients. These are needed for proper energy, for many parts of the body to function, and to avoid illness – in short, to be of good health.
Therefore, it is of vital importance to care for teeth and gums and to keep our teeth as long as possible. A simple, effective daily routine is possible that ensures a longer existence for the teeth that we are born with. Yet, a survey of American adults regarding personal dental care habits was conducted by GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare and illustrated a lack of good dental care in many of those surveyed.
Of all the people surveyed, those in Detroit are happiest with the condition of their mouth and teeth. 72% said good or very good compared to 66% overall.
While 72% of those surveyed nationwide said they are satisfied with their current oral health routine, 74% of those surveyed in Detroit felt this way. Overall, 60 percent of the people in Detroit said they brush two or three times a day while fifty percent of the general population said they did this.
An effective tooth brushing takes two to three minutes, to thoroughly brush the all the teeth, front and inner sides of the teeth, ensuring the back molars and front teeth are well brushed. Then the tongue should also be scrubbed from back to front to remove odor-producing bacteria. These simple steps can avoid painful dental emergencies.
Overall, it was found that 65% of those surveyed brush less than 90 seconds and in Detroit it was only 60 percent. Many dental troubles begin when the food eaten that day is not scrubbed free from the teeth. That food becomes a sticky film of bacteria called plaque.
The biggest troubles come from the food caught in between the teeth.
Yet, this survey discovered that 55% of those surveyed floss less than once a day. In Detroit that percentage was 60%. The dentists at Bright Side suggest that flossing is done minimally once a day. It can be done before or after brushing, depending upon preference.
Even with brushing several times a day and daily flossing, it is still a vital hygiene step to have the teeth professionally cleaned by the dentist or dental hygienist. Yet, only half of the people surveyed had had their teeth cleaned by a dentist or dental hygienist in the past year.
When dental plaque is not removed regularly, a hardened residue known as tartar (also called calculus) generally develops. Plaque can be eliminated by twice-a-day brushing and by flossing at least once a day. If plaque has hardened into tartar, this must be removed professionally by a dental hygienist or dentist.
Want to avoid the need for emergency dentistry? When allowed to remain on the teeth and especially below the gum line, tartar can lead to chronic inflammation and infection. It is vital to see the dentist twice a year.
