When Should You Have Fibreglass Flat Roofs Installed?

With the weather continuing to be pretty appalling, is now the right time to consider fibreglass flat roofs? Do fibreglass flat roofs offer any additional protection compared to equivalent alternatives? Should you wait until the weather perks up, dries out and starts behaving itself before submitting your home to being partially roofless for the time it takes to fit GRP roofing?

In order to answer these questions in this article we will be considering the problems and often ignored dangers present in many homes, and compare the alternative solutions in order to understand why GRP roofing offers a unique way of both solving existing problems and providing effective protection against likely issues which would be experienced in the future.

To begin with, if you have a flat roof on your property, either over the porch or over a ground floor extension, when was the last time you took a really good look at it? Perhaps if you take a look at it now you'll notice a build up of mould or even moss.

Many flat roofs have what looks almost like a lush green carpet of moss, and you might even have considered the benefits this offers in terms of insulation. However, what you'll almost certainly notice is that two things are occurring at the same time.

The first thing you'll probably notice is that the roof is sagging, partially as a result of all that moss, and the accumulated debris it harbours. As the roofing starts to sag, rainwater and moisture begins to pool in the centre, adding to the weight and exacerbating the sagging.

The second thing you'll notice is the edges, joins and seams of your flat roof are starting to peel away and tear. Clearly a sagging roof is going to pull at any edges or seams, and this additional pressure will result in tears and splits.

Clearly this is going to allow moisture into the roof cavity, and as this is usually constructed of timber you can be fairly confident that the moisture will be partially absorbed by the wood. Any additional moisture will simply drain off into the wall cavity, resulting in rising damp and mildew in your home.

The roof timbers meanwhile will begin to swell, warp and split, and this will cause the roof to distort even more, resulting in more tears, gaps and moisture intake. Very quickly you're building up real troubles for the future, and usually by the time you start to notice a problem occurring indoors, it's too late.

So if you have noticed any of these symptoms you may be considering the benefits of fibreglass flat roofs, but when should you consider having one fitted? If you've noticed any of these symptoms, no matter how slight, it is tremendously important to halt the process and replace or repair the roof. Delaying can easily result in the problem transferring moisture from the roof to the wall cavities, and for so many reasons this must be avoided.

However, if you haven't noticed these problems occurring, why wait until they do? If your flat roof is a traditional felt lined roof, then it is a certain fact that build up of moisture and moss will occur, and that damage will occur over time.

Rather than waiting for damage to start, having fibreglass flat roofs installed now will effectively prevent any risk of moisture intake or damage for around twenty years. But what about the problem of exposing your roof to the elements during the current bad weather? Would you be better off waiting until the warmer, sunnier months and having GRP roofing fitted then?

Most roofs take time to fit, but GRP roofing can be fitted quickly and easily in a matter of a morning or an afternoon. This means that the process can be completed quickly enough , and using a proven installation process which ensures your home is not exposed to such climatic risks.

It is precisely because of the adverse weather that having fibreglass flat roofs installed now is highly important, because any slight damage now is certain to worsen over the next few weeks and months, by which time the problems will be transferring themselves inside your home. By acting now you can be protected against the problems caused by traditional flat roofs, and can wave goodbye to rain pooling, moss growth, mildew, damage and distortion for at least a couple of decades.
