How To Choose The Most Suitable Patio Canopy For UK Properties

Have you considered having a patio canopy fitted? Have you seen patio shelters advertised or installed on homes nearby, and considered the benefits and advantages of having a patio canopy installed at your home?

In some parts of the world, astonishingly, it seems that sunshine is almost guaranteed, especially during the summer months. Apparently people who are forced to endure living in such warm and sunny countries get to enjoy their patios for much of the year, dining al fresco, inviting friends round for drinks or a barbecue in the evening, or just sitting outside with a cool drink and a paper. Terrible.

In this country however it's another story, and for much of the year we don't know whether to lather up in factor 50 or put on an extra couple of coats and a woolly hat. The weather in the morning can be dismal but by lunchtime you've got sunburn, or you may step outside on to your patio, discover it's sunny and dash inside for that long cool drink, only to find that by the time you've poured it, it's pouring outside too. Lovely country, the UK.

But all is not lost, because by having a patio canopy fitted you can start to enjoy your patio area for longer each year. Not only that but you'll be able to enjoy your patio when it suits you, and when it is convenient, rather than having to dash outside for a quick ten minutes' sun.

Instead, patio shelters can help to extend your home, embracing some of your garden area and patio area, providing a place to sit outside, relax, and enjoy the hard work you've invested in making your garden looking beautiful. Or if you're not a green fingered type, you could simply sit and enjoy looking at the concrete and enjoying listening to the sound of the neighbour fuming at his faulty lawnmower.

But whilst it's easy to appreciate the benefits of having a patio canopy fitted in order to help protect you from a little rain should we ever experience such a climatic phenomenon, patio shelters also offer protection from the sun too.

Increasingly these days we're becoming much more aware of the dangers of sitting out in the sun for too long at a time. When we do get hot sunny weather the sun seems to cut through with much more ferocity, and in the UK alone skin cancers now constitute half of all cancers being treated, and this total is rising.

A patio canopy can provide valuable and necessary protection from the sun's harmful rays as well as the dismal downpours we're likely to experience - and more often than not, both on the same day!

But when it comes to choosing a patio canopy you have a few choices and options, and it will be important to consider which one is most suitable for you.

Many people have approached the idea of having a patio canopy fitted having seen a canvas or fabric based canopy, and certainly these are a relatively cheap and easy option to have fitted. However, canvas and fabric isn't usually waterproof, and even those advertised as being waterproof tend to lose this after a year or two.

If you're only looking for shelter from the sun, it's worth considering a fabric patio canopy, although bear in mind that it will still get wet, and over time some fabrics may tend to rot or discolour.

An alternative is sometimes known as Glass Reinforced Polyester or GRP, which is available in a wide range of colours and finishes, and is the same basic material that has been used by the RAF to make airplane bodies and by the Navy to make the hulls of boats.

Able to offer protection against the sun's rays, GRP patio shelters are also able to provide complete protection from the rain too, and will not warp, rot or discolour. Cleaning them is easy - just point a hosepipe at them for a few minutes, and then carry on enjoying your outdoor space.

Timber based patio shelters and fabric made shelters tend to be less convenient if your walls are slightly irregular or uneven, resulting in gaps through which rain can seep, providing you with a free damp neck every time you step outside! A GRP patio canopy is fitted in such a way that the seam or join against the wall is fully watertight, so you won't get a wet back of neck!
