Work at home opportunities fall in two categories: the work from home jobs and the home businesses. If you would like to join other work at home mums and start creating an income from home, you need to consider which option is better suited to you.
With a work from home job, you still work for somebody else. Your company is permitting you to work from home, but you’re still being paid for the time you put in and the work you were employed to do. With a home business, you're your own boss, you decide on the work you want to perform, and you get paid profits for the results you create - thus you don’t get paid for the time you spend working, you get remunerated for results, meaning that if you can create great outcomes, even in a short time lapse, you can make an uncapped revenue as a work at home mum and business woman.
There are many things for mums to consider when choosing a work at home opportunity, between employment and a business. Also, within the home business category, you have a few choices: you can begin your own business based on a talent you have or a product you manufacture or make yourself (for example, personal assistant work, data entry or typing, cooking, teaching, craft, interior or graphic design, writing, fashion accessories or clothing, and the list goes on…), otherwise you can start a home business which is part of an existing company, where the company usually provides you with the product, the systems in place and the coaching and support you require to start your business.
Initially, you need to consider your character to determine which kind of work at home mum you want to be, employee or mumpreneur. If you’re somebody who feels more confident to report to somebody else, doesn’t enjoy making decisions or being independent, who prefers to be given a structure with deadlines, agendas, and a definite description of your role, your responsibilities and the activities you need to do to get paid, then a work from home job might be for you. If you are someone who likes autonomy, who likes to be in charge, who is self-motivated and self-reliant, who desires to determine how much they get paid and has a lot of willpower to get it, then you can be successful with a home business.
Another really relevant issue is the costs associated with working from home. If you choose to take on a job, you may need some money to line up your home office, and a number of your expenses might even be reimbursed by your company. On the other hand, having a work from home business usually costs more. Depending on the opportunity, you probably will have initial costs related to a membership, using business tools or systems, purchasing or producing products, and promoting your business. Bear in mind that in each case, you can benefit from tax deductions. Work at home mums who decide to start a business might have more expenses, but sometimes have a higher income potential.
Working from home can be so rewarding when you have kids. You can take-up activities throughout the week with your kids, take them to playgroup, the park, be present for after-school activities, meet-up with other mums or grandparents, give them flexibility around their sleeping routine and simply enjoy spending time comfortable at home. It can be however a juggling act for work at home mums, just like it would be if you were to work in a corporate office because you would still have to juggle everything between work, daycare or school pick-ups and drop-offs, grocery shopping, etc. It just means that you can manipulate the schedule so that it works for you and that you’ll gain more flexibility around looking after your family and working. It just calls for discipline and organisation, like so many other things in life!
So I hope this helps clarify choices for work at home mums. Now all that is left to do is find the ideal work from home job or business opportunity!
