Toys are mainly bought for children at Christmas, Birthday's and more often than not at Easter now, instead of eggs.
I remember when I was a little boy, there wasn't the huge selection around like there is nowadays, I always wanted a toy Post Office and I actually got one, and thought I'd been given the world. It probably cost my parents about $5, which was a lot of money in those days.
Buying toys for a child these days isn't an easy feat, warnings on everything, not suitable for under 3, may cause choking, caution small parts, adult supervision recommended.
People are often heard saying I'm only spending $150 this year, as their child is only 2, only to hear them moaning afterwards because, it cost a lot more.
I find the selection for boys has got a lot better over the years, it used to be Lego, Meccano, toy soldiers, train sets, Scalextric, model planes and boats, but with all the electric gadgets and gizmos it makes shopping a lot easier if not more expensive, but provides hours even years of fun.
Girls are a lot easier to buy for, until they become teenagers, then it's music, make-up, secret diaries, clothes and money, which I think takes all the fun out of going shopping.
Educational toys are brilliant; your child can start learning even before they start working, which in itself isn't a bad thing.
Rattles for babies are seeming to become a thing of the past, now it's all baby gym's and play mats, the gym's are brilliant as your baby can play with them from the age of about 3 months, obviously with adult supervision. Play mats are more for babies who are sitting up, 6 months upwards, there are things to press and pull, before long they recognise sounds from the different items on the mat, they will soon have their favourite, as that is the only noise you will keep hearing.
Children's' toys are best classified by age groups, not that that is essential in itself, especially with educational toys, as some children learn more quickly than others. So if your child has a V.Tech computer or say for a 4-5 year old, when they have got to learn all the answers and different activities, you know that next Christmas you can get them the next one up, this is great as you know they will enjoy it, but then eventually the time comes when they want a real computer.
