One of the most horrifying experiences that will probably occur in our lives is when we are put in an emergency situation. When nerves pop and unfathomable pressure flows through our veins, we suddenly freeze like ice not knowing what to do next.
The most common emergency situation that we can encounter would be fire. Fire usually erupts when the atmosphere is dry and this is during summer time. Regularly, the common house fire is caused by faulty electrical wiring and worn out appliances that has not been used and just left alone in its place for the next remodeling job such as ceiling fans, wall fans and the like. Casualties involving house fires are usually caused by being trapped and suffocated by the smoke which can be caused by poor planning and design of the house.
Here are some guidelines for an efficient emergency friendly house.
Two or More Exits
When designing a house, the first concern when considering openings would be security. The more access to the house the more difficult it is to monitor and secure it. But any house should have at least two exits on opposite sides so that in case a fire is blocking on one side they can still pass at the other side.
Window Sizes
Window jams should be sized adequately enough for an adult to pass through the window just in case all doors are blocked. It should not be covered by large furnitures or appliances so that when an emergency strikes, the access would be easier and quicker for a person to get out.
Grill
Designing themed houses may require grills to be placed outside the windows. Make sure that the grills can be opened and the lock should be on the inside and not on the outside for easy access on whoever is in the room.
Hallways
Hallways should be wide enough for two people to pass by. Avoid putting something on the floor or on the side so that it cannot block or trip anyone in emergency situations.
Lights
Emergency lights should be placed at the hallways and near the exit doors since power companies cut off electricity when a fire will occur to prevent electrocution.
Fire is one of the most common calamities that a society may suffer. Casualties can be prevented if a routine can be made like fire drills even on residential buildings to practice its occupants on how to react to such situations. People can agree to meet at a certain area of the neighborhood so that they can asses on who is still inside the house and can immediately alert the firemen. Household members should be briefed on probable exit points in case the doors are jammed or blocked.
