It is such a big no-no to talk about your exes and past relationships. You are on a date because you do not want to dwell on the past and you are ready to start fresh and begin a relationship with someone new. As much as possible, focus your topics on you and your date's interests, views, etc. People don't like the thought of being a transition date or a rebound for that matter so avoid talking about your old boyfriend or girlfriend. Besides, if you were to rave about it all night, it would seem as if you haven't gotten over your past relationship.
Avoid topics concerning politics. You will have plenty of time if you were to go on other dates to discuss your views and opinions on the current political situation of your country or on who your favorite president is. Don't get yourself into such a heated discussion of politics especially if your date is not so fond of it or hates to talk about such a topic.
Skip a discussion on religion. If you share the same faith and you are both that devoted and active at church, then it is probably okay. However, some people are not that interested about religion so talking about which religion is better won't wow your date over.
A positive attitude and a positive image of you will definitely score you points. No matter how much you hate your job, avoid discussing it over your first date. While the topic of work will always come up somewhere during the conversation, you can focus more on the positive aspect of it or you can be honest about how you don't like it without going much into the details as to why.
While everyone wants to make a good impression, bragging about your accomplishments can turn off a date. This will make you appear self centered and arrogant. You can always talk about some less serious achievements but tone down the bragging. Talking too much about your achievements is like telling your date that you are too good for him or her.
Creating a bit of mystery about yourself will definitely make your date curious about you wanting for a second one. Also at times playing hard to get usually works. Don't overdo it though. If you find your date talking about a topic you find uncomfortable to talk about don't be afraid to tell him or her honestly about how you feel that things should be taken slow.
As long as you try to your best to avoid the topics that can have your date fleeing, you will definitely be asked for second and even other succeeding dates.
