When it comes to the leather jackets we all love and cherish, cleaning that leather can be a tedious and dangerous proposition. Obviously, sticking your favorite leather jacket in the household laundry is not an option, and not every dry cleaner will launder leather. Leather cleaners can and usually do cost a small fortune. This usually means having some useful tips on cleansing that leather can insure you are getting the most out of your leather.

Here are a few useful tips. Be sure to use your better judgment. Some tips will work for some people, but not all the tips will work for all people!

Remove Mildew or Mold from Leather

1/2 cup rubbing alcohol

1/2 cup water

Mix the solution together. You can put into a spray bottle, or simply use on a clean, white cloth that has been slightly dampened. Use this mixture over the mold or mildew in a light layer. Wipe dry with another white cloth. Do not put into direct sunlight until completely dry. Feel free to use a fan on low setting to help the drying process along.

Removing Stains from leather Jackets

Please, keep in mind that not all stains are removable from a leather jacket or leather outerwear. However, you may find that these simple solutions can save your jacket.

Toothpaste - Toothpaste is a wonderful cleanser if used properly. This is the old-fashioned toothpaste. Gel toothpaste will not have the same effect. Lightly rub a small strip of toothpaste in the stain, and then gently rub off.

Nail Polish Remover - If you have ink stain, no need to despair! Try some non-acetone polish remover. You will gently rub on, and then wipe off. This may help remove ink. Also, be sure not to use acetone nail polish remover.

Conditioning and/or Cleansing Leather Jackets

If you want to freshen a leather jacket, you can simply put your leather jacket on a hanger in a bathroom. Run hot water as hot as possible in the tub to get a nice steam going. Add some nice orange or lemon freshener to the bathtub. This will definitely give your leather jacket, coat, or outerwear a fresh, new smell. You can also do this with your favorite essential oil. Try a touch of lavender or other favorite aroma.

Cleaning Suede Nap

Suede is difficult to clean. This is usually left to the professionals, but there is a tip that can make your visits a bit further in between. Try using that tan art gum eraser to magically erase stains, and you can even use an emery board to gently fluff up a lazy nap. This is only going to help a little, but it can save you considerable time and money.

Removing Road Salt (For Motorcyclists)

If you have ever ridden or driven a motorcycle, you know what it is like to get road salt on your favorite leather jacket. Salt ruins a leather jacket. That means it is essential to remove the salts.

1 part vinegar - white

1 part sterilized water

Simply dampen your favorite white, clean, and lint free cloth with the solution and rub gently over the leather jacket.
