Amenorrhoea is the absence of menstruation in females. This condition typically excludes any absent menstruation for normal female function, such as before puberty, during pregnancy and/or breastfeeding or after menopause. Ayurveda considers this disorder as an imbalance of vata dosha.

Amenorrhoea may be caused by a hormonal imbalance associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). It can be accompanied by extreme weight loss, hair loss.

There are two types of amenorrhoea: primary and secondary.

Primary amenorrhea occurs when a girl at least 16 years old is not menstruating. A light flow is nothing to worry about. But if the period has not begun at all by age 16, there may be something wrong.

Secondary amenorrhea occurs in women of childbearing age after a period of normal menstruation and is diagnosed when menstruation has stopped for three months. It can occur in women of any age.

Several other reasons for missed periods include:

Illness, sudden change in weight, eating disorders, extreme exercise, hormone irregularities, certain medications and Stress. Certain forms of contraception. Starting or stopping the use of birth control pills can result in amenorrhea. Some types of oral contraceptives are designed to restrict menstruation to a specific number of cycles per year. Intrauterine devices (IUDs) can cause amenorrhea in women using a progesterone releasing IUD. Thyroid disorders. Having an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) can cause amenorrhea.

According to ayurveda amenorrhea may be prevented by maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet and moderate exercise with plenty of rest.

1) Eat small meals to maintain stable energy levels, this will also significantly reduce food cravings.

2) Eat regular, healthy meals including plenty of vegetables, fruit, mixed grains and cereals

3) Drink less caffeine. Try drinking water instead, 6 8 glasses a day.

4) Cut down on alcoholic beverages.

5) Cut down on salt and salty foods to help reduce fluid retention.

6) Get enough rest, sleep and exercise.

7) Don’t smoke.

8) Wear a well fitting cotton bra if you suffer tense, painful breast.

Ayurveda considers this disorder as an imbalance of dosha. The three doshas lead to various disorders and does not let an individual to lead a happy and a healthy life. For example imbalance of pitta dosha results in stress and anxiety which is one of the major causes of ammorhea. Similarly, the imbalance of vata and kapha dosha also results in the disorders so it is very essential to keep these doshas balanced for smooth functioning of the body. According to ayurveda amenorrhea may be prevented by maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet and moderate exercise with plenty of rest.
