In essence, a car battery is a container full of chemicals that react together to produce electrons. These electrons collect on the negative terminal of the battery. Connecting a circuit from the negative to the positive terminal will cause the electrons to flow in that direction as quickly as possible via a load in this case, the engine. Within a car battery a negative plate and a positive plate are chemically joined by electrolytes. It contains a fixed amount of reactants and when these are discharged, both plates undergo chemical changes to become lead sulphate and the result is that the battery goes flat.
Car batteries can discharge for a number of reasons. Modern cars rely on constant power to maintain facilities throughout the day and night, such as central locking systems and motion sensor equipment. Batteries that are becoming low will show themselves in cold weather; a battery uses more charge to turn over a cold engine and, if it doesn’t have sufficient power, the engine will not start.
