Why are smiles so white and bright these days? Yellow teeth. Gray teeth. Black teeth. Grungy teeth are considered unacceptable now. Why? Because teeth whitening is a fast, simple and affordable process.
There was a time when weekly bathing was considered acceptable. Water was difficult to heat and transport. Most people worked on the land so it was not unusual for bodies to have dirt on them. People traveled on horses, not in closed cars with windows. But then came a time that it was expected that people bathed daily.
In recent times it is so much less common to see people with discolored teeth. The simplicity and efficacy of tooth whiteners has made it ordinary for people to whiten their teeth. Just as disposable razors made leg hair on women unfashionable, teeth whitening systems have made grungy teeth out-of-date and socially unacceptable.
White and not white. These are really the only two colors of teeth. The American Dental Association, the ADA, reports that most teeth are effectively whitened with the newest whitening agents, “Your dentist can tell you whether whitening procedures would be effective for you. Whiteners may not correct all types of discoloration. For example, yellowish hued teeth will probably bleach well, brownish-colored teeth may bleach less well, and grayish-hued teeth may not bleach well at all.”
A rare dental problem causes some teeth to be unable to be whitened, but then there are other solutions such as veneers and bonding that can easily solve these issues.
The ADA adds, “Likewise, bleaching may not enhance your smile if you have had bonding or tooth-colored fillings placed in your front teeth. The whitener will not affect the color of these materials, and they will stand out in your newly whitened smile. In these cases, you may want to investigate other options, like porcelain veneers or dental bonding.”
The report by the ADA continues, “If you are a candidate for bleaching, your dentist may suggest a procedure that can be done in his or her office. This procedure is called chairside bleaching and may require more than one office visit. Each visit may take from 30 minutes to one hour. During chairside bleaching, the dentist will apply either a protective gel to your gums or a rubber shield to protect the oral soft tissues. A bleaching agent is then applied to the teeth, and a special light may be used to enhance the action of the agent. Specialized lamps have been used during tooth whitening procedures to enhance the action of the whitening agent.”
Bright Side Dental offers the Zoom! Tooth Whitening System. The website for Zoom explains the procedure, “The Zoom! Light-activated whitening gel's active ingredient is Hydrogen Peroxide. As the Hydrogen Peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, bleaching colored substances while the structure of the tooth is unchanged. The Zoom! light aids in activating the hydrogen peroxide and helps it penetrate the surface of the tooth. A study has shown that use of the Zoom! lamp increases the effectiveness of the Zoom! gel by 26% or more, giving an average improvement of up to eight shades”
